Through the Rotary-Akina finalist evening, I had the pleasure of meeting fellow Rotarians, Rosie and her husband. They were travelling to Fiji to volunteer, a trip organised by Rotary New Market and staying at the island Taveuni to restore the eyesight of locals who were blind or had poor vision. I was very keen to assist in helping the children in Taveuni and gave thirty Naman stationery packs for Rosie and her husband to donate. The stationery packs were donated to Buca Levu Girls School and I was told the girls were very pleased to get them and the teachers were very appreciative. A photo of the kindergarten class from this school visiting the hospital is below. Thank you so much to Rosie and her husband for approaching me about a donation of stationery to the children in Taveuni and for donating the stationery to the school. I am in awe of you both volunteering your time and resources to restore peoples' eyesight! Emily.
From the 9th to the 22nd of December I volunteered at Dratabu Village in Nadi, Fiji as part of a Care and Community Project of Projects Abroad. I stayed in the village with a local family and in the morning I taught at the local village primary school, Vunayasi District School and then in the afternoon along with eight other volunteers from Australia we painted the primary school. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience that has truly opened up my eyes to this part of the world. I donated 13kgs of stationery to the primary school including pens, exercise books, colouring pencils, rulers, erasers and more. I was able to meet with their principal who was very grateful for the stationery. He told me that some of the families were less fortunate than others as the children's dad or mum were unable to work, so they can not afford stationery supplies for the start of the year. Also he said that the families with lots of children have to prioritise and give the older children going to high school the stationery and books, therefore the younger children get what is left or nothing at all. Giving out the stationery and seeing the children's faces light up was the highlight of my trip and even a small item such as a pen can make a big difference to a child and their learning. It is great to know that this stationery will be well utilised by the children at the Vunayasi District School where they have a roll of around 100 children. Check out the photos below of me in Fiji donating the stationery to the children at the local village primary school. Emily.
I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from my school to travel to Fiji for two weeks where I will be staying with a host family and volunteering at the local schools in Nadi. I am super excited about taking stationery I have collected and received from the local community and businesses. I am taking over 300 pens, 50+ erasers, nearly 100 books/notepads, colouring pencils and pens, liquid chalk, blu-tack, paper clips and 25 rulers to Fiji for the local schools in Nadi. Check out the photos below for all the stationery I am taking with me to Fiji to donate to the children and teachers there who are in desperate need of school supplies to assist the children in their learning. I am leaving this Sunday so will be without wifi until the 23rd so will be unable to check any emails sent to [email protected]. However please feel free to contact me and I will get back to you at the end of this year. Emily.
